[Aug. 14th, 2009|05:18 pm] |
So i've been busy lately.
I've had a bit of vacation, and have gone to a few places, involving a narrow gauge train ride along the kurobe valley, as well as out to Yamaguchi to ride behind double headed steam - and went to several other locations on the way.
Here's a preview!

| Hokkaido Pt 3, the Zoo, busride and Sculpture park |
[Jul. 14th, 2009|12:52 pm] |
Something none of you have ever realized, is that I've been having color issues on this website - the pictures on my computer just don't match the pictures i've uploaded. I've finally figured out what's going on. Short version - our computer monitors don't support the embedded color profile in these images, saved for the web and viewed through this particular program. The confusing thing about it is it causes files that don't match my monitor (from the original file) on my monitor (viewed as the uploaded file). This is also happening on your monitors and if you haven't calibrated the colors on your monitor properly - there's a good chance the color shifts are rather severe from what they should look like. There's really not much I can do about it, without re saving my files for the native color space of your monitors - so the colors are likely gonna have to stay where they are.
Anyway - I've finally gotten around to uploading the rest of the Hokkaido trip - as well as a few bonus photographs. I expect a couple of the following will look better as I played with native color profiling a little.
------------------A few in and around Kyoto recently --------------

--------------------------------------------------------
------------------The Sculpture Park-------------------------------- I didn't have much time here, and really couldn't begin to explain this place - it's very different from the griffins sculpture park, all of the sculptures are massive, and you can see here one of the stone pyramids, making a manmade hill. The other things that were there, were also just of scales that were hard to capture - and this was our last morning, so we had about 30 minutes before we had to head back to the airport - it would've been nice to have had more time here, it was neat to walk about.

----------------------------------------------------
----------------------On the Bus--------------------- We had quite a nice bus ride, I didn't take too many pictures, other than here, where we stopped for a rest, and I had ice cream. Hokkaido is well known for potato's and farming. It has a very open feel that is much different from the cramped, overdeveloped mainland.

--------------------The Asahi Doubutsuen (zoo)---------------------------- It's a very famous zoo in Japan, but it's not really very good - the penguin tube, that allows you to walk under the water lets you see penguins fly above you. There are a few other neat innovations but the cages are all very small and cramped.

Again - the order of chronology is actually from here to the top - but that's not too important. ------------------------------------------------------------
All in all, It was a good trip, 5 days and 4 nights, with most of the first and last day being transport to and from Hokkaido. - now these are done until the next major trips.
This weekend - I'm headed somewhere, but I can't remember the name, we should have a scenic train ride and a good hike in the mountains. Followed by another trip in a week or two to see the ruins of a castle up in the mountains (in another location)
The big trip will be in early August - out to Yamaguchi to ride behind a double header - getting tickets was no easy task, as you can only reserve tickets one month in advance at 10 am, and they were sold out at 10 am the first day I went, although I was the first there. Some cunning helped secure them by visiting the station at 530 am the next day (though the tickets weren't purchased till 10 am) - I'm sure we'll stop at a few other locations on the way to and fro.
From there - not really any large trip plans till christmas, and then 3 trips planned for next spring / summer. |

| Steam from Hakodate |
[Jul. 3rd, 2009|11:30 am] |
My new workflow which uses raw image processing atop work and social life have kept me a bit busy, but I've finally gotten some time to get the next bit of my Hokkaido trip up. Maki and I took a steam ride from Hakodate to Mori and back. I'll have one more segment of the Hokkaido trip to add next.
So, again, like most other things, the way I upload, means chronologically, the last photo in this post, is the first photo of the segment. There's a few shots in here that I missed, and don't have any other way, so you'll have to excuse a couple of the throwaways.
The ride was nice and relaxing - and was a standard JR ride, which meant you could use it to get from A to B, but it doesn't really go very far. The whole ride was just a few hours. Maki enjoyed her first steam ride as an Adult - she'd been on the one grandpa, mom and I rode a long time ago. Speaking of which, her birthday was last Friday.
the End

Back on the highway and headed to the next destination

Had to take a trolley to get to our train, and back to our hotel.

quite a difference from our car.

we passed one of the first bullet train models... it was pretty beat up

| Cherry Blossoms at Himeji |
[Apr. 6th, 2009|02:52 pm] |
I took a trip to Himeji over the weekend, with the sole purpose of photographing. Here are some of the results of this trip. Maki and I went. It was quite rainy, but the blossoms were just about everywhere.

Below, are several months worth of photographs. I've had some issues trying to connect to this site, as well as upload images to my hosting site, ever since the school added this website to the "Censored" list, for being a "personal" location - where students could potentially date, talk, etc.
Below - are out of order, images from both the trip with my mom, as well as several other smaller trips about and around, I hope to do some editing to this, to get things a bit more well ordered. For now, I'm just going to leave you with a plethora of images....

| Okinawa and Mie |
[Jul. 2nd, 2008|05:17 pm] |
Unfortunately, my program has renamed my images with random titles, so it will be awhile before I can properly sort them all out. I'll do my best to break them up.
----------------------------OKINAWA----------------------------- Okinawa is a pretty amazing place, I went in march during golden week. There's alot to see and do in Okinawa. Okinawa was once known as Ryukyu and was its own kingdom. There are several locations that are remains of old castles. *jo means castle, and sounds alot like my name.
------- Zakimijo Ruins---------
Like many of the ruins, they feel much more like Chinese or Korean structures than Japanese.

------Maki and my hat at Zakimijo------- ------ Zakimijo Ruins--------
------Tamaudun------
Tamaudun - Ohaka, is a mausoleum. It houses the remains of the kings and queens of the Ryukyu kingdom.

------Tamaudun--------
-----Shurijo------
Is the main castle structure, and outer walls, the castle still stands, there are no photographs of it here, I will have to upload some later, they didn't come out as it was rather dark and many locations were restricted. These are the outerwalls and a photograph of a painting I was able to get before I was informed there was no photography.

----Shurijo-------
-----By the roadside, random beaches and locations-----
There are many beaches and places to stop, and driving around the island in a rental car afforded several views and the occasional stop to check it out...

------------------------Roadside-----------------------
----------------Nakijinjo Ruins----------------
Another set of ruins, these far more extensive than any of the others, by far my favorite place so far. You can probably tell from the large number of photographs.

-------------------- Nakijinjo Ruins-----------------------
--------------Making Glass-------------
I got a chance to blow glass, it was really neat.

-------------Making Glass---------------
-----------Aquarium and views-------------
We stopped at an aquarium with a massive playground outside, along with a few other things. It was difficult to take pictures through the glass inside, with the huge amount of people jostling for position. I also went sea kayaking and went snorkeling, there were amazing views but did not have a waterproof camera so.. But at the aquarium we were able to take a special tour and go above the tanks, so there are some interesting photos from that location. But seeing the fish at the aquarium paled in comparison to seeing thousands in the actual ocean by the reefs.

---------Aquarium and views--------- ------------------------------END OKINAWA---------------------------
---------Mie 48 Waterfalls----------
After the trip to Okinawa there was still a bit of free time, and we headed to mie, which is surprisingly like watkins glen or any of the other areas... see for yourself! It was a very nice place, still with quite alot of people.

-------Mie 48 waterfalls-----------
----------------------Random Photographs---------------------------------- Photographs here and there back in Kyoto with my newer lenses, just thought i'd share

---------------------------Random Photographs------------------------------
I took more than 1000 photos over the course of 4 days, it took a long time to go through them and pick some of the more interesting ones. My next trip is in about a months time up to the top of the 5th tallest mountain in Japan, Yarigatake. I am excersizing and preparing for the trip.
I hope all is well, and Happy birthday to all the birthdays i've missed! sorry its been so long since ive posted. Life in general is busy, social life, musical instruments, photography, bicycling/hiking, Work and an unstable internet connection.

There's parkinglots under the city...

Driving from Shiga to Kyoto

The price of strawberries in Japan. Most certainly higher than the price of eggs in china.

My trolley line in the snow.
The following (below) are at Kinkakuji in the snow. It was luck to be able to see it as such, especially among the 20 busloads of korean tourists that day

It really is gold (or at least gold plated, it's not paint. Perhaps previous images didn't really give you the sense that this does.

Maki and I were able to create pizza and wings. Wings of the buffalo variety, with the help of some sauce from the anchor bar. They were good.

Headache now, Organization and explanation to arrive in this post later. Duane requested more pictures of people, so several are included...

- The above are bamboo groves in Arashiyama (west of where I live, on the edge of Kyoto. I've tried several times to capture the feel of this place, but it's really hard to do.

-A temple in the Arashiyama area had some Daffodils, and other views

-Mom got me an IR filter that I can use with my camera, so I've been using it here and there, these are some of the first images. They're all around Kamogawa (the river that runs through downtown Kyoto

-from the left (Some guy, Nikki, Surya and Shawn) Shawn and Surya are Jet's

-He was waiting for me to take a picture and leave, and I was waiting for him, but there were too many people to give up our spot and be able to return, so we both just took the picture and moved on

Some remaining fall color at nanzenji, this year's leaves were a disappointment compared to last year

My friend Mike went with me to take pictures, he's learning photography, and is one of the few people I hang out with rather often. The road above is the road in the mirror. Notice the traffic's dirrection.

Paper cranes hanging at a shrine

-Santa makes it here too, i guess. Though he's more of a novelty than anything else, Christmas is a lot like any other Tuesday.

- It's amazing how many little things like the above are next to, across from, or a small part of the massive hustle and bustle, also above.

A Christmas cake, they grow strawberries in Okinawa, specially just to be ripe for this time of year. My friend Maki (now girlfriend) and a few other people had a small Christmas party at my apartment

Bamboo, it's what's for dinner. *

These ended up out of order, these are reeds in a small pond in the Yasaka Jinja Area.

Nikki, and one of his friends (friends of Surya)

Rio and Tomoe

Ayuko

Surya (another JET) and Shouko.

I went to USJ with Mike and his girlfriend, Yumi.

Some pictures, wandering about in the evening, in kyoto, and one of the only examples of graffiti i've come across in all my time here, but likely it was done by those who own the stall, as that "door" opens up, and becomes a shop that sells tshirts

I took a trip up to Mt Hiei after thanksgiving, here are some of the pictures from that trip, again i took the ropeway and cablecar to get to the top, Leaves are still mostly green though.

Yesterday (sunday) I went walking about the eastern edge of kyoto, and found lots of interesting things, a graveyard, a Giant bhudda, A memorial to people who died in the various wars, in which there were lots of monolithic stones with thousands of names carved within. I ran into Maiko (geisha in training) And many other interesting views.

Ginkakuji, the "silver" pavilion. The garden's at ginkakuji are rather amazing and unfold as you walk a very windy path, it's not something that can really be conveyed photographically, without alot of time, and the ability to leave the path, since there are soo many trees and people. So here are just a few views.

Arashiyama again, various views from various paths

Kiyomizudera, I'm going to have to return here, I accidentally went on the opening of a special event, as a result there were a few billion people there. And I lost the light, so I didn't get many photographs, I plan to return later. The leaves here really just havent gotten near peak. The colors this year are not as fantastic as last year, I'm still hoping though, likely i'll return to mount hiei this weekend, depending on word from a friend. You'll not you can see kyoto tower in the distance from the vista afforded by the entrance to kiyomizudera, I haven't seen the actual temple yet, which is a good way up the mountain.

These are Kasuga shrine, which is located, very close to my apartment, they have a festival, with lots of great foods and things, usually on my birthday, i can walk through it, when returning to my apartment from the train station. Obviously, these images are at night, I've passed by countless times without actually taking pictures there.

The Kamo river, which runs through the downtown area, just past sunset.

| Random Update |
[Oct. 21st, 2007|06:59 pm] |

Things over here are well, it's gotten very cold, very quickly. The leaves will probably begin to change soon, but they're still green.
Thanks again for the birthday wishes, and I hope the weenie roast went well this year.
I'd like to let grandma+grandpa know what I've used their gift to purchase a nintendo ds lite, the little handheld game system that harry hayden and noah have. It's very cool, I got the coolest program ever for it, called Kanji sonomama rakubikijiten. It's basically a dictionary program, What's really cool is that I can actually draw the Kanji onto the touchscreen and look up complex Kanji that way.
Many words used to take me up to 15 minutes to find, some even longer, since for kanji, you have to count the stroke order, and figure out which is the primary radical (important piece of the kanji) And then you have to find the next kanji, an individual word can be made up of more than one character.
So, now I can look them up in a matter of seconds, and I get practice writing them as I look them up, It's incredibly helpful, I remember alot more than just looking up an individual word. It's also smaller than my other dictionary so it's very useful.
Harry, hayden and noah might be interested to know that I've gotten Zelda, Mugen no sunadokei, The phantom hourglass... It's also for the DS, and, in Japanese. But the coolest thing about it is if I tap the kanji, it brings up the pronounciation, I've learned several few new words from it. And I've managed to get past the first puzzle. It's certainly good language practice.
I'm also making various friends, and my speaking ability has increased exponentially from when Mom and Grandpa came to visit. As Thanksgiving and chrismas approach, I find it hard to believe I've been gone for so long, and haven't been home.
Miss you all. -joe |

These are in reverse, but I came across a french impressionist painting art gallery, that's set amongst a garden, on top of a mountain (Mt. Hiei) You can see Lake Biwa in the distance, and to get there I took a cable-car, followed by a rope-way

| Today |
[Aug. 16th, 2007|10:35 pm] |
Well, I ended up with today's photos being in reverse order, and i'm too tired to fix it. It's about 10:30 pm, so you're just starting today!
I've been relaxing over the past few days, having this week off, but I haven't done too much. It's been hot here, the kind of heat that makes you sweat out the bottle of water youre about to drink.
Humid too.
So... things are well, I havent typed much on here recently, but ill see if i can fill in a few details as we go.

Nijo Castle's outer wall just happened to be on my way home, by bicycle, so I figured, since it was lit up nicely, id take a shot, looks like theyre renovating it.

taking one last look at the Daimonji Fires, from, some random apartment building where I found a staircase.

This is as close as I got tonight, there were people out in droves, everywhere, i haven't seen as many people as are about in awhile.

Sunset over Kyoto. from my apartment roof

That, is the character dai, it sounds like dye or die, and means big or large or great. It's being lit up later tonight, it's one of five characters, I'll end up seeing 4 of them, however, I'll only have time (and ability because of the herds of people, and poor viewing locations) to take pictures of this one. It should be noted, that the previous batch of pictures which show kyoto from an elevated position, were all taken from the very center of that "dai" character. and that Giant X thing in the previous set below, is one of the braces for the bonfires that light it up. positionally, the character is north of the imperial palace and then due east.

The Sagano Romantic Train, I had mom and Grandpa on this about four months ago now! wow, four months, The ride is short but beautiful. While you can do the ride and return by boat, something I intend to do, That's not how I got here, I bicycled to a point at arashiyama, and then hiked , and climbed, (clomb anyone?) and managed to make it quite a ways, it was a very difficult bunch of scaling over rocks, I can imagine mom would say i wouldve loved that as a kid. I still do.

A JR train crossed the bridge. I wanted to go up to the bigger trestle further in that the sagano romantic train uses but, it was tough to get too.

That's right, I climbed over all that to get here.

Wow, difficult hike, i was thirsty and sunburned, i keep forgetting to put suntan lotion on. oh well. It's not so bad. I have water at least. The bridge looks a few hundred meters away. |
